Tampa, FL (PRWEB) February 06, 2012
The roof of the St. Jude Dream Home in Eads, Tenn. is being designed in accordance with the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety?s (IBHS) FORITIFED for Safer Living.
FORTIFIED for Safer Living is a construction program for new homes that provides specific standards and guidelines to help homeowners and homebuilders build stronger, safer homes from the ground up.
The roof of the 3,700-square-foot home will feature:
An impact resistant and high-wind rated roof to reduce damage from high winds and hail.
Roof straps, which increase uplift resistance to high winds (see what could happen when an unstrapped roof is subjected to 70 mph winds – http://vimeo.com/17299430).
Roof sheathing fastened with 8d ring shank nails, which provide a stronger connection than commonly used smooth shank roofing nails.
Roof perimeter blocking to transfer wind and earthquake loads to walls.
A sealed roof deck to reduce the risk of water damage when the roof covering (shingles and roof paper) is blown off allowing water to enter the home (Ed. Note: further information about sealing a roof deck can be found on IBHS? Hurricane Testing: Sealed Roof Deck Demonstration Media Asset page).
?Real, meaningful risk reduction starts by upgrading the roof system. Even if the roof is only partially compromised during a storm, the home becomes a bucket for collecting water,? said Fred Malik, FORTIFIED program manager. ?By designing the roof to be in compliance with IBHS? FORTIFIED criteria, this roof will be stronger, safer and more resilient than a traditional, code-compliant roof in the face of natural disasters like earthquakes, and severe weather events such as thunderstorms with high winds and hail.?
